Keeping your stainless steel clean and fingerprint free can be quite a task and choosing the right cleaning product and method is a question we are frequently asked.

The first thing we should start off with is what you should avoid when cleaning your stainless surfaces. While most might think disinfecting wipes or other products with bleach in them would be a great start, we highly recommend staying away from them. Any product with harsh chemicals can tarnish and dull the shine of the steel, including glass cleaners. Though it may seem obvious, never use abrasive tools like steel wool or brushes as they will scratch the surfaces and rust will develop over time. The best tool to use is a clean microfiber cloth and wipe with the grain.

The competition is high these days when it comes to brands of cleaning products but you won’t find our favorite solution in the cleaning aisle. White vinegar isn’t just a trick your grandparents used to clean mirrors and windows, this multi-use liquid is also great for cleaning stainless steel. You can add it to a spray bottle with water in equal parts and wipe it clean with your microfiber cloth. Being able to do your laundry in the comfort of your own home is something that most of us take for granted. Condo or apartment living can have its advantages and disadvantages. While having a shorter commute or community center can be pretty convenient, having to do your laundry elsewhere can be quite inconvenient. Generally speaking, condo buildings aren’t built with venting in each individual unit. This can make it difficult or, sometimes, impossible to have a dryer in your home. While in most cases it is possible to install venting for a new dryer, it can be costly. However, there is a simpler solution that involves no venting at all – ventless dryers. A ventless dryer uses a unique heat exchange system that is designed to recycle the air eliminating the need for exhaust and making installation painless.

When it comes to ventless dryers there are two types to choose from and both are more energy efficient than your standard dryer. The first is a heat pump system. Standard, or “vented” dryers, have heating elements that heat the air and circulate it into the drum to dry your clothes. Then, the hot air is sent out through a vent exhaust that exits the home. A heat pump dryer pushes hot air into the drum and uses air-to-air condensation to remove moisture from the air and send it down a drain or into a reservoir that is emptied. The second type is referred to as a condenser dryer. This technology is very similar to the heat pump dryer but uses cool water instead of cool air to remove the moisture.

These processes use lower temperatures that are gentler on your laundry and leave no need for a lint trap. Using less heat and recycled air can lead to longer dry times but significantly reduces the amount of energy required. A dishwasher cleans the dishes but, unfortunately, it can’t clean itself. Remembering to clean your dishwasher is something that probably doesn’t come to mind but this helpful appliance is used quite often and needs a little extra care to keep it running.

One of the most commonly overlooked steps is to check and clean the filter. Depending on which model you have, there may not be a filter to remove but instead a built-in food grinder. If you are unsure of the location and how to remove it, look over your owner’s manual for instructions. This is something you should do regularly as food can quickly collect and prevent your dishwasher from doing its job. This is a good time to wipe out the floor of the dishwasher.

Over time, the gasket around the door can also collect bits of food and keep it from sealing properly. Using a warm, wet soapy rag, wipe all the way around door and rubber seal to remove any grime. Don’t forget to wipe down the control panel as well.

Finally, it is recommended to clean the spray arm 1-2 times per year. The holes that release the water can become blocked with mineral deposits and decrease the pressure. Using a damp soapy cloth, wipe it down and use a toothpick to clear the holes. You can also try running the dishwasher on its longest cycle while it’s empty and toss in a dishwasher cleaning pod, like Affresh. For models that have a stainless-steel tub, this should be done every 3-6 months. If you are more partial to natural cleaning methods, try putting a small cup or bowl of white vinegar on the top shelf and set it to run a hot water cycle.

Being the workhorse of the kitchen, the average person uses their range 2-3 times daily. If this is true for you, it is recommended to clean the interior of your oven every 3 months. After confirming that your oven has cooled, start by using a damp rag to wipe out spills or debris from the oven door, sidewalls, ceiling and floor. Placing a drip pan on the bottom can help eliminate spillage onto the oven floor but remember to clean it out regularly and replace it when necessary. Do not use foil to line the bottom of your oven. If you notice any sections that do not wipe clean, we recommend using natural ingredients rather than store bought cleaners. Simply mix some white vinegar, baking soda and water to create a non-toxic cleaner that won’t damage the enamel on the interior of your oven. You can soak a non-abrasive cleaning tool in this mixture and begin working on those stubborn areas.

For any spills on the exterior, start off with a damp soapy rag and continue to stay away from those abrasive cleaning tools. A heavy-duty degreaser can be used for any areas that did not come clean. To clean the control panel spray cleaner onto a rag before wiping – avoid spraying the panel directly so that it does not drip down inside of the panel.

Grates and oven racks should be cleaned regularly so that you can avoid having to replace them. This can be done by letting them soak in the sink with warm soapy water for 10-15 minutes. After soaking, scrub clean with your regular kitchen sponges and dry them immediately. If you have a gas range, remove and clean the burner caps with this same process.

And, finally, don’t forget to clean underneath and behind your range at least 1-2 times per year. While there are special tools for this, using the hose attachment on your vacuum cleaner will work just as well!

But, no matter how tricky the situation is, our installers are trained to tackle the most unusual jobs with precision and skill! Every team member is provided with continued training and education resources to ensure they are up-to-date with the most current WAC and RCW requirements. Damian John Installations believes in delivering high quality service that we can proudly stand by. We do not believe in taking shortcuts or providing faulty work.

Over time it has become more and more common to find homes that do not meet these current codes and that is something that we cannot ignore. This means that when we discover something not up to code, we must address it before moving forward. Too often, we find exposed wiring that can lead to electrocution, shock or fire. We also discover that more than one appliance is running on the same circuit which does not meet the state’s current requirements. It is our responsibility to follow the code, no matter what. With licensed electricians on staff we can make any necessary corrections, leaving you feeling confident and secure. As a full-service installer we are prepared for almost any obstacle without having to outsource. In the rare event that we are unable to provide a service, we will provide you with recommendations of some of our most trusted friends in the industry.

How the Process Works

Damian John Installations takes pride in providing the best, top quality customer service to every one of our customers. The unique services we offer creates high demand and we tend to remain scheduled out anywhere from 3-6 weeks in advance for installations. When scheduling your installation, we do not require a deposit but do require that you provide a credit card to cover our cancellation policy. Our cancellation policy helps ensure that all appointments occur when planned.

At Damian John Installations, we understand that your time is just as valuable as ours. This is why we call 1-2 business days in advance to provide a 2 hour arrival window. Because we allow all customers the opportunity to cancel or reschedule up until 2 business days prior to their scheduled appointment, there is constant fluctuation in the schedule preventing us from scheduling arrival times in advance. We provide onsite service to multiple locations including the San Juan Islands, Yakima Valley and all of the Puget Sound. This makes it very difficult to appease all of our customer’s scheduling needs, even though we certainly wish we could!

What happens to appliances when they are replaced?

Often when replacing appliances, we are asked the question “What do I do with my old appliance(s)?”. While this decision is entirely up to you and your specific situation, we have listed a few of the most common choices made by appliance owners like yourself.

To begin with, if your existing appliances are still functional, you have the option of donating your appliance(s) to a family in need. There are several organizations that offer free pick up if you are unable to deliver them to a donation location yourself. These options include Salvation Army, Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity and more! You can find the best option for you online by visiting http://donationtown.org/washington-donation-pickup/ .

Another option you have when your appliances are still functional is reselling them for a little extra cash to put back into your pocket. With today’s technology, you have a variety of options for reselling unwanted items. Some of the most common platforms include Offer-up, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace and Letgo. If you are choosing to keep your appliance for donation or resale, be sure to let your installer know and they will take extra caution when un-installing and relocating it to a nearby room of your choice.

If you are replacing your existing appliance because it has cooked its last meal or washed its last dish, disposal seems to be the only choice. Did you know that Damian John Installations offers free removal and haul away of your existing appliances when being replaced? That’s right! We will take care of this step for you as part of our full-service installation. When your new appliance is installed by one of our professionals, your existing appliance is either returned to the store you purchased your new appliance from and sent off for recycling or taken directly by us to the dump for recycling.

Routine Refrigerator Maintenance

Just like your car, there are a few things you need to remember in order to prolong the life of your new appliance. Generally speaking, most refrigerators can have a lifespan of 10-15 years with a warranty only lasting 3-5 years. Following a few simple routine steps can help you get the most out of your new refrigerator and avoid high energy bills, part replacement and service fees.

First, it’s time to get out that pesky manual that most of us tend to shove in a drawer until something goes wrong. If you have misplaced or accidentally tossed your manual, don’t worry – it can be located online.

Have you ever opened up your freezer and noticed frost build-up around the sides? Refrigerators require clear and sufficient air flow to maintain temperatures and avoid failure. There is an intake vent and a return vent to evenly circulate the air, one located inside of the refrigerator and one located inside of the freezer. The location of these vents varies depending on the model and can be found in your manual. Once you have located the vents, be mindful not to block them. If items are blocking their air flow it can cause temperature issues and frost build up in the freezer. You should also take them out and clean them one to two times a year to ensure proper air flow.

Your refrigerator also has a condenser coil and fan that should be cleaned one to two times a year as well. The coil location can be found in your manual and you can clean the coils with a refrigerator coil cleaning brush , these can be purchased online or at your home appliance store. These brushes are tapered and flexible making it easy to get between the coils and remove any collected debris. If you are a proud pet owner, you will want to clean the coil a minimum of two times per year (or more) as their fur tends to collect in the coils and can clog it up. As an added bonus, you can also use this brush to clean out your dryer lint vent! Once you have cleaned the coils with the brush, you can use a vacuum to remove and remaining/loose debris.

The condenser fan helps cool the coils and prevent overheating by circulating cool air around them. After you have located your condenser fan, follow the instructions to open it up and wipe it down with a damp towel and use your vacuum to remove any remaining debris. If your drip pan is in the same location, now would be a good time to clean it out as well.

Having a proper seal on your doors ensures that the air is well contained. If your doors do not seal completely, it can force the compressor to work overtime to try to maintain the temperatures. The gasket on your doors can get dirty and become brittle over time causing them to split or crack. You should regularly wipe these gaskets clean to remove any tacky substances with a rag or sponge soaked in warm soapy water.

Remembering these basic guidelines will help guarantee each glass of milk is always chilled to just the right temperature and that your midnight ice cream snack continues to be frosty throughout the years!

Guidelines for your install during the pandemic

ATTENTION: If you or anyone in your home is ill, please notify us prior to your scheduled appointment and we will reschedule your installation for a later time when it is safe to enter your home.

Damian John Installations is proud to be a part of an industry that has been deemed essential amid a National Emergency. During this time, we know that it is important for our team and community to continue to be safe. For Damian John Installations to maintain operations, we must follow the CDC guidelines to prevent the exposure and spread of COVID-19. In addition to the CDC guidelines, we have developed a plan for our team and customers to follow while at our job sites.

Here are a few ways that you can help us follow these guidelines:

· Please clean and disinfect the areas surrounding the installation location prior to your scheduled appointment. We will do the same before, during and after our install.

· While in your home, our installers must avoid physical contact by maintaining a personal space of at least six feet when possible. In order to help us accomplish this, please try to remain in a separate room during your installation.

· If you have any pets in the home, please keep them in a separate room away from the installation area.

· If possible, identify a place where our team can wash their hands

What to do if your dishwasher leaks

First, don’t panic. Walking into a puddle in front of your dishwasher may not indicate a huge problem. First, especially if water is flowing from the dishwasher, locate your water shut off and stop flow to the dishwasher. Usually there is a shut off valve under the sink. If not, in older homes, you may need to shut off the main water to the house either in your utility room or at the street. Now, still not panicking, check the seal on the door. More than once I’ve come home to a puddle and proceeded to freak out, only to find that I inadvertently closed the end of a spoon in the seal of the door. Like leaving the shower curtain a little open, you’ll end up with a puddle. If there is nothing preventing the door to seal, check the gasket seal itself. Does it look in order? If you are unable to determine the cause after troubleshooting, we recommend reaching out to your installer for further investigation.

Gas versus electric, pros and cons of each

When it comes to deciding between gas and electric, there are a few things to keep in mind. There are pros and cons to both options.

First and foremost - cost! When cooking, gas is generally 10% - 30% more cost effective than electric. However, if you do not currently have gas in your home, you may want to look into the costs involved in converting from electric to gas. Gas appliances also tend to be higher in cost when purchasing and installing.

Second, temperature control. With gas appliances you can instantly adjust the temperature and it is easy to determine whether or not the stove is on. The downside to this is that your burner not being on doesn't necessarily mean it is not releasing gas into the air. You want to be mindful when turning your gas stove off. But, don't rule out electric just yet! There are some that have similar temperature controls like induction, making them comparable to gas. See our upcoming blog about induction cooktops for more details!

Third, appearance! Electric cooktops have a sleek, smooth design with easy to clean surfaces. There are no burners to remove and no crevices for spills to run into. Keep in mind that there is a downside to that smooth, glass surface as stains and scratches can take away from their appearance. You want to be sure to clean your surface with the proper materials and always reference your user's manual. For more details and tips, see our blog about cleaning your glass cooktop.

Finally, ventilation. When you have a gas appliance, Washington state code requires ventilation. This ventilation must exit your home and cannot be set to re-circulation. If you are changing from electric to gas, you will need to have the proper ventilation in place in order to meet the state requirement. Keep an eye out for a future blog about updraft systems vs downdraft systems!
